In Manggarai language, Mbaru Niang is drum house because one of the house used to keep "the holy of heritage drum" and "gong" which it is community sacred media to make communication with their ancestors. A big roof made from palm fibre and almost touching the ground is familiar with Honai in Papua, and supported by single wood-post as the center. There is a fireplace inside at the middle house.
There is only seven Mbaru Niang permitted no more or less. It is communal building with six to eight family who lives together in each house, and the rest of people (family) will move on to another village, Kombo village, about 5 km from Wae Rebo and have epithet as the twin of Wae Rebo because the most people of Kombo village from Wae Rebo.
Mbaru Niang architecture is high structure which it is about 15 m and all of it cover by palm fibre. Each house have 5 level inside and made from Worok woods and bamboo which the structure tbundled by rattan as nail substituter. Each level have different name and own function : first level called lutur, its meant tent, it was functioned for living place and family gathering. Second level is lobo, an upper story used to keep food stuff and daily goods needs. Third level called lentar used to keep plantation seeds, such as corn, rice and beans. Fourth level called lempa rae used as the place to keep foods stock in dryness season. The last / fifth level called hekang kode used to keep "langkar", it is bamboo plaiting with square form to keep offering inside and dedicated to ancestor in tradisional ceremony.
Twinned Local Wisdom, Wae Rebo is Old Manggarai Custom village who still out for local wisdom conserve as one of Indonesia culture prosperity. One of the action that always to be done is Pa'u Wae Lu'u ritual. This ritual leaded by clan leader to ask permission and protection from their ancestor spirit for every guest who visit and stayed at Waer Rebo until they living the village. And moreover, this ritual dedicated to all guest when arrived at the place where they coming from. For local people, every tourist or guest who coming to Wae Rebo is family who coming home to the village. Before the ritual fishised, every guest haven't permission yet to do anything include taking a picture. The Wae Rebo clan leader will explain first (briefing) about several actions and attitude that consider as taboo things, such as: prohibition to swear/curse and using bad language, to make romance even in marriage status as long as in Wae Rebo, and a lot of things that become local wisdoms which still in preserve and maintained.
Becomes the international famous village eco-tourism didn't made Wae Rebo people's stood still and hopefully with tourist who coming to support their daily lifes. Coffee and Cura cloth are the best products in supporting their daily lifes. The coffee commodity is Arabika coffee, and cura cloth is wovent cloth handicraft which women as the craftsman in Wae Rebo. This cura cloth have bright and clear motif as its characteristic.
Tourist permitted to join their daily activities and it is good chance to learn any traditional living, such as : joining with womens to crush coffee, or join with mans to pick a coffees, and even more to watching how the ladies mercerize cura cloth in front of their home. At night, every single guest will take a rest in Mbaru Niang with pandanus leaves plaiting as the mattress after talking each other and story telling about Wae Rebo big family life experiences.
